Rachel Carson: Silent Spring & Other Environmen...

The book that sparked the modern environmental movement, with an unprecedented collection of letters, speeches, and other writings that reveal the extraordinary courage and vision of its author Library of America launches its Rachel Carson edition with this deluxe illustrated volume presenting one of the landmark books of the twentieth century together with rare letters, speeches, and other writings that reveal the personal courage and passionate commitment of its author. A huge bestseller when published in September 1962, Silent Spring led not only to many of the laws and government agencies that protect our air, land, and water, but prompted a revolution in environmental consciousness. Now for the first time, in previously unpublished and newly collected letters to biochemists, ecologists, cancer specialists, ornithologists, and other experts, Carson's groundbreaking expose of the unintended consequences of pesticide use comes together piece-by-piece, like a puzzle or detective story. She makes common cause with conservationists and other allies to build public awareness, hiding her private battle with cancer for fear it might distract from her message. And in the wake of her book's astonishing impact, as she becomes the target of an organized campaign of disinformation by the chemical industry, Carson speaks out in defense of her findings while remaining a model of grace under pressure. Throughout the collection, Carson's lifelong love of nature shines through. In writings both lyrical and intensely moving, she conveys her "sense of wonder" to her young nephew, dreams of conserving old-growth forest in Maine for posterity, and recounts her adventures and epiphanies as birdwatcher and beachcomber. A future companion volume will gather Carson's "sea trilogy": Under the Sea-Wind (1941), The Sea Around Us (1951), and The Edge of the Sea (1955). LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation's literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America's best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Radical Reform Unionism in South Africa

By the end of the 1980s, the independent trade union movement in South Africa consolidated what Adler and Webster call radical reform' as a trade union strategy: building socialism using legal means of struggle and policy engagement through structures like NEDLAC. Labour set out to influence both the democratic transition and the shape of post apartheid South Africa. This book examines the limits, successes and failures of this strategy through a case study of the Chemical Workers Industrial Union (CWIU, 1987-1999). Drawing on original research and a wide literature on debates over trade union strategy, it argues that the union did not benefit from this strategy. It was unable to affect the direction of the chemical industry, or prevent retrenchments, outsourcing, privatisation and low salaries. Radical reform requires, in addition, a technocratic style of politics, based on expert negotiations and high level research leaving rank and file members as passive spectators Indeed, factors the union itself admits. The book then ends with an attempt to answer the puzzle for why the trade union movement, despite its admitted failures, persists with radical reform

The rotational spectrum of oxatrisulfane and di...

In the course of this thesis, two different molecular species have been studied. Both are connected to different aspects of rotational spectroscopy regarding the challenges in the investigation as well as the scientific questions.Oxatrisulfane (HSSOH) is a molecule of chemical interest with the focus on obtaining the geometric structure and the stability of possible configurations of oxasulfanes. Since it is a very reactive molecular species, which is not stable even under laboratory conditions, the production of oxatrisulfane is the bottleneck to a spectroscopic investigation. The 13C-isotopologues of dimethyl ether (13CH3O12CH3 and (13CH3)2O) are stable molecules, but the analysis of their rotational spectrum is challenging due to large amplitude motions of the two methyl groups. The development of spectroscopic models for molecules undergoing internal rotation is still ongoing, involving combined theoretical and experimental efforts. In addition, isotopologues of dimethyl ether are of strong astronomical interest. Precise prediction of their rotational spectrum is essential to overcome the line confusion in astronomical observations of star-forming regions and to enable the detection of more exotic species. Furthermore, the relative isotopic abundance ratios of molecular species in the interstellar medium can contain information on their formation processes. These ratios are important pieces in the big puzzle of astrochemical networks which aim towards the understanding of the evolution of star-forming regions.

Nanoscale Electrochemistry of Molecular Contacts
54,98 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book discusses the merging of nanoscale electronics and electrochemistry and how this can potentially modernize the way electronic devices are currently engineered or constructed. It introduces the electrochemical capacitance as a fundamental missing concept that solves the puzzle between molecular electronics and electrochemistry at the nanoscale. The electrochemical capacitance, as a fundamental principle, is deduced from first principles quantum mechanics. The text also confirmed that faradaic and non-faradaic processes are only different physical approximations of the same sort of energetic phenomenon. The book comprises three chapters. Chapter one introduces the concepts of chemical capacitance, relaxation resistance, and the quantum resistive-capacitive circuit and demonstrates how these elements are translated to the electrochemistry context. In chapter two, the chemical capacitance, the fundamental concept and missing part of the puzzle that unity electronics and electrochemistry, is deduced from first principles of quantum mechanics. In chapter three, the concepts are practically used in different contexts that include molecular diagnostics, molecular conductance and super-capacitive phenomena is explained using the introduced basic principles.

The untold story of how poison rocked Jazz Age New York City. A pair of forensic scientists began their trailblazing chemical detective work, fighting to end an era when untraceable poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime. Chief medical examiner Charles Norris and toxicologist Alexander Gettler investigate a family mysteriously stricken bald, factory workers with crumbling bones, a diner serving poisoned pies, and many others. Each case presents a deadly new puzzle and Norris and Gettler createrevolutionary experiments to tease out even the wiliest compounds from human tissue. From the vantage of their laboratory it also becomes clear that murderers aren't the only toxic threat--modern life has created a kind of poison playground, and danger lurks around every corner.

Pollution Limits and Polluters' Efforts to Comply
140,00 CHF *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book integrates the fields of economics and law to empirically examine compliance with regulatory obligations under the Clean Water Act (CWA). It examines four dimensions of federal water pollution control policy in the United States: limits imposed on industrial facilities' pollution discharges; facilities' efforts to comply with pollution limits, identified as 'environmental behavior'; facilities' success at controlling their discharges to comply with pollution limits, identified as 'environmental performance'; and regulators' efforts to induce compliance via inspections and enforcement actions, identified as 'government interventions.' The authors gather and analyze data on environmental performance and government interventions from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) databases, and data on environmental behavior gathered from their own survey of all 1,612 chemical manufacturing facilities permitted to discharge wastewater in 2002. By analyzing links between critical elements in the puzzle of enforcement of and compliance with environmental protection laws, the text speaks to several important, policy-relevant research questions: Do government interventions help induce better environmental behavior and/or better environmental performance? Do tighter pollution limits improve environmental behavior and/or performance? And, does better environmental behavior lead to better environmental performance?
